What is genre?

What is Genre?

It will be a summary of today's lesson about genre.

From what I learned, genre is a type of movie that attracts or achieves what the audience is looking for. Genre convention is the elements that are included in the movie such as the key events or the plot.

Choose any movie, and describe the genre and the genre conventions of the movie. Describe its audience (demo/psycho). How is the audience appealed to?

Chosen movie: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Trailer:

Star Wars follows the genre of sci-fi. Some genre conventions included in the movie are spaceships and aliens outside in the vast space. This movie is made for children around the ages of 5-15 however some people who are in the age above 15 watch this movie and usually are families who go to the film with their kids. The reason why the audience is appealed to the movie is due to the well-made storyline and the remarkable CGI during that year. The choice of the wonderful location and the awesome camera work of the scene make it look wonderful.

Chosen movie: Joker Folie A Deux
Trailer:

Joker folie a deux follows the genre of action and romance. The genre convention used to support action is the explosion that is happening in the scene and the relationship Joker creates with a woman in the scene. The target audience for this movie is made for people of mature ages (middle-aged) as this movie contains violence towards some characters. The main reason why audiences are attracted to this movie is because it is the next chapter of the original film "Joker." Another honourable mention is because of the choice of lighting used to convey emotion to the audience while watching the movie.

Chosen movie: A Quiet Place Part 2
Trailer:

The trailer of this movie maintains a suspenseful, survivalist atmosphere just like in the first movie (A Quite Place) while maintaining the same horror and thriller genre. This movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world invaded by a mysterious creature who hunts by sound and forces the protagonist to stay quiet and navigate through a world of silence which allows us to recognize the genre convention. Another genre convention used is the use of tense quiet, well-used sudden sound leaps to scare the viewers and the constant threat of an invisible monster highlighted in the trailer. Another element that shows a survival thriller is the bravery of the characters to outrun the monster. The target audience of the trailer includes viewers who enjoy post-apocalyptic settings and is not recommended for kids under the age of 13 to watch this movie due to the act of violence included in the film.

Chosen movie: Twisters
Trailer:

The trailer showcases the film as a thrilling natural disaster movie which is mostly known for its dramatic action scenes, imaginary natural disasters and high stakes. The genre convention used in this trailer highlights the violent force of tornadoes by showing people desperately trying to escape the onslaught of nature's wrath. From the trailer, we can see some elements to support the genre convention such as horrific scenes of gigantic tornadoes tearing across the landscape. The target audience for this trailer is fans who love action-packed films and disaster films.

Self-Reflection: Research helped me and my team to further understand the genre and travel convention of travel-related media. This helps us to understand what our target audience is appealed to and what kind of sound are used to attract the audience's attention. We also realised that most advertisement has a message conveyed to the audience which could be useful when we are making our advertisement.

My Team

Here are all my teammates who participated in the project:

Jeremy Arnold Setiawan: https://jeremy-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/
Kenneth Robertson Lee:
 https://kenneth-regentsmedia.blogspot.com/

Self-Reflection: The teacher gave us an option to pick our own team so I picked the people who are talented and close friends. Each of us has a good talent such as Arnold being really good at video editing and Kenneth being good at acting in front of the camera. In the early weeks of the project, we had a really good start because we had a lot of great ideas. However as weeks went by, our team started to fall off because we started to get lazy and conflicts started to erupt. In the end, we did finish the video but at a lot of cost.

My Week 1 Progress
Basic Introduction to Media Studies.

My Week 2 Progress
This week we learned a lot of semiotics such as camera works, miss en scene and many others. I think this will be useful for the project because it helps us attract the audience if we perform well. The problem I have in learning semiotics is that there are different types of semiotics and it would probably be difficult to insert them into some scenes.

My Week 3 Progress
In this week we learn more about types of camera movements and angles. Many of them need to be memorized but I can do it. We also did some work for the project such as the statement of intent.

My Week 4  Progress
This week we learned again more about camera angles and movements but now we have an extra topic which is about sound. We also did some project work such as the location scout and risk assessment when the teacher wasn't here.

My Week 5 Progress
This week we learned about miss-on-scene and reviewed more about camera angles and movements. Miss-en-scene is a French term which creates a visual presentation of a film or a play. This would be helpful for our tourism project because it expresses the scene by creating a sense of time and space, and setting a sense of time and space, and setting a mood. This week I missed one Media studies lesson about video editing.

My Week 6 Progress
This week, we learned about different Genre theories from different genre theorists such as:
- Steve Neale
- David Buckingham
We would try to apply those theories that we have learnt into the final ad video.

My Week 7 Progress
Narrative Theory
- Barthes
- Levi Strauss

My Week 8 Progress
This week we mostly continued our project and added some parts to our blog such as the CCR and the self-reflection that we needed to add on every blog. I think the self-reflection helps us to identify the problems that we have run into and how would tackle or improve ourselves if we encountered that problem again. The CCR also has the same purpose as the self-reflection but it is more in-depth.

Self-Reflection: This blog shows the weekly progress that I have made over 9 weeks. I learned a lot of useful knowledge such as camera work and sound work which proved to be really helpful and crucial when doing the travel advertisement. The plan kept my team schedule on track and finished most of our tasks before reaching the deadlines.

Project Brief

Here is the brief for my tourism ad project.

Self-Reflection: This is the first blog I made, I feel really excited to start doing this filming project because this is my first time doing it and I hope it goes well without any trouble.
