Before choosing the genre, I researched various genres and here are the results.
Film | Genre/Genre Conventions | How did this scene introduce characters, and settings and create intrigue? | What did you like/dislike about the intro? |
Extraction 2, 2023 | Action Fight, explosion, contraband, | The scene introduces a character who got wounded by a gunshot on the bridge in UAE. He then falls into the river and is rescued by his comrades. | ~ I like how the lighting fits perfectly with the scenes. ~ I dislike how it already introduces us the main character who got shot. The people who haven't watched the first extraction wouldn't understand this film. |
Pamali Dusun Pocong, 2023 | Horror Ghosts, night time, jumpscares | The scene introduces an unknown character who is digging out a grave for the dead people. It also has dark lighting to show the setting as mysterious and haunted. | ~ I like how it does not need a dialogue to tell the audience what genre the film is going to be about. ~ I disliked how some of the scenes don’t make any sense but this might be how Horror films do it normally. |
Uglies, 2024 | Sci-Fi Spaceship, space, futuristic guns | The scene introduces the beginning of the story for the film and how they reached that current state. | ~ I like how the transition and the ~ I dislike how the first two minutes of the film do not show the characters who are going to play in the film. |
500 days of summer, 2009 | Romance Dating Couples, | The scene introduces pictures of the characters during their young age and how they look during those days until they compare it to the current age set by the movie, which shows a huge difference as their faces seem very stressed and dull. | ~ I like how it introduces us how what the characters in their young ages look like and the narrator explains the characteristics of the character so we can understand the feelings of the character throughout the film later on. ~ I disliked how at the beginning of the movie, the narrator hints at how the ending would look. The narrator said something like “Blah blah blah this is not a love story” |
Johnny English, 2003 | Comedy Background laughs, jokes | The scene introduces a character who is dreaming of the scenarios and is then woken up by his work partner. | ~ I like how the film already showed alot of comedy elements in the first 2 minutes. ~ I disliked nothing about it. |
The preliminary research helped us to explore different types of genre conventions that would be suitable for our final video. In the end, we decided to go for a mixture of action and comedy because this genre suits our actor and is probably doable within the timeframe of one year. It is also a unique type of genre as it can engages to the audience emotion which makes them interested into watching our film.
