My group and I have decided to create a film opening in the Action/Thriller genre. Here is my research into the codes and conventions used in openings of texts in this genre.
Typical conventions from the Action/Thriller genre:
Films from this genre usually include contrabands, explosions, martial arts fight scenes and dramatic music that creates suspense for the audience. This film is most likely to use a lot of different types of camera angles and most likely they would try to develop new techniques of camera shots and angles. The narrative is normally about a hero fighting against high odds (the hero is always outnumbered by the villains). These movies are often in life-threatening situations where the hero always ends up winning. The film opening is often used to introduce the main character and the villain with introducing the main problem of the film.
John Wick: Chapter 4, 2023
Produced By: Summit Entertainment Thunder Road Films 87Eleven Entertainment
Distributed by: Lionsgate
Genre / Sub Genre: The film John Wick 4 has a genre of Action/Thriller with a sub-genre of Mystery.
What conventions does it conform to? The conventions that the opening scene conforms to are the punches that John Wick is throwing onto the punching bag in the close-up shot to create detailed information showing blood splattering from his fist onto the bag. The film also played with dark lighting which implies that something dangerous is coming using long shots of the environment to show the full length of the setting of the film. It also hints someone in the dark is going to emerge after being concealed for a long time.
What conventions does it subvert to? The convention that subverts the opening scene is the sunset scene at the start. Typically, an opening scene would introduce a morning scene to show the character starting on a new day, but this shows a character training himself, which creates hermeneutic codes as we don't know what he is training himself for. What representations are there? (people/places/events)
What technical elements are used to give meaning to the representation?
The scene opens with a close-up shot of a man punching a wooden training dummy with blood splattering on it. It adds an effective emotion to the scene. The next scene used is an establishing shot of the city to introduce a new scene and tell the viewer where the action is happening. It then cuts back to the first scene of the main character punching the wooden training dummy again, this creates an add-up of the same emotions to the audience which is suspense. Another scene is shown on a low angle of a different man coming down the stairs. This conveys a sense of vulnerability or loneliness to show how isolated the place is from society. Again it cuts and repeats to scene 1.
The next scene is where the character enters a tunnel after descending down the stairs through a long shot. This shot shows the entire subject from head to toe and places that subject in relation to their surroundings. The tight tunnel created can symbolize isolation. When characters are in such spaces, they often feel cut off from help or escape routes, heightening the emotional stakes. This sense of being trapped can resonate with viewers, making them empathize with the characters' plight. Every new scene shifted, there will always be scene 1 (man punching the wooden dummy) which adds tension and suspense to the opening scene. In the last scene, the man approaches a room and ignites a fire to light up the room where it is shown the main character punching the wooden dummy. The fire in the scene symbolizes danger and tension as someone in danger emerges from the darkness. Once the main character is displayed for a few seconds, the fire is then put out to end the trailer to create a sense of curiosity in the audience.
Uncharted, 2022
Produced by: Columbia Pictures
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Releasing
Genre / Sub Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Thriller/ Comedy
What conventions does it subvert to? The usage of unexpected Context of putting the main character in danger from the outset—hanging from a cargo plane—the scene subverts expectations in the scene. The opening scene challenges the traditional pacing of action films, which typically begins with exposition before increasing to action, by throwing the audience into turmoil right away rather than building to the action gradually. Another way the movie defies genre norms is by using humour in moments of suspense. Uncharted has humorous moments that reflect the character's personality and offer comic relief, which is uncommon in traditional storylines, although many action-adventure movies have a serious tone. What representations are there? (people/places/events)
What technical elements are used to give meaning to the representation?
The scene opens with the main character awake while hanging upside down in a close-up shot high up in the sky. This creates immediate suspense and tension for the audience in the opening scene. It then cuts to a few seconds of POV shot to show the audience feels the same fear as the main character looking in first person or creates an emotional connection between the audience and the character. It then follows with a zoom-out from the character which supports the previous scene to show how high and high and terrifying the character is above sea level. The next couple of scenes show the character climbing his way up back to the plane using the rope tangled onto the cargo boxes. The opening scene then overuses the medium shot and close-up shot of the character to effectively create suspense and fear combination of emotion to the audience. In the final scene, the main character achieves his goal of reaching the plane however he is soon pushed off by a red car which the colour creates a sense of danger. Upon being pushed off, a Dutch angle is used to give the audience an uneasy feeling, like something ominous is looming just ahead. This type of camera shot can create a feeling of disorientation, madness, or imbalance. Dutch angles enhance tension, generate fear, and exacerbate unsteadiness. It then transitions to the POV of the main character spiralling around and falling through the blue sky. All of a sudden a random hand holds the main character and transitions to 15 years ago.

This video above also helped us as a guide into opening scenes.
Before choosing the genre, I researched various genres and here are the results.
Film
Genre/Genre Conventions
How did this scene introduce characters, and settings and create intrigue?
What did you like/dislike about the intro?
Extraction 2, 2023
Action
Fight, explosion, contraband,
The scene introduces a character who got wounded by a gunshot on the bridge in UAE. He then falls into the river and is rescued by his comrades.
~ I like how the lighting fits perfectly with the scenes. ~ I dislike how it already introduces us the main character who got shot. The people who haven't watched the first extraction wouldn't understand this film.
Pamali Dusun Pocong, 2023
Horror Ghosts, night time, jumpscares
The scene introduces an unknown character who is digging out a grave for the dead people. It also has dark lighting to show the setting as mysterious and haunted.
~ I like how it does not need a dialogue to tell the audience what genre the film is going to be about. ~ I disliked how some of the scenes don’t make any sense but this might be how Horror films do it normally.
Uglies, 2024
Sci-Fi Spaceship, space, futuristic guns
The scene introduces the beginning of the story for the film and how they reached that current state.
~ I like how the transition and the ~ I dislike how the first two minutes of the film do not show the characters who are going to play in the film.
500 days of summer, 2009
Romance Dating Couples,
The scene introduces pictures of the characters during their young age and how they look during those days until they compare it to the current age set by the movie, which shows a huge difference as their faces seem very stressed and dull.
~ I like how it introduces us how what the characters in their young ages look like and the narrator explains the characteristics of the character so we can understand the feelings of the character throughout the film later on. ~ I disliked how at the beginning of the movie, the narrator hints at how the ending would look. The narrator said something like “Blah blah blah this is not a love story”
Johnny English, 2003
Comedy Background laughs, jokes
The scene introduces a character who is dreaming of the scenarios and is then woken up by his work partner.
~ I like how the film already showed alot of comedy elements in the first 2 minutes. ~ I disliked nothing about it.
The preliminary research helped us to explore different types of genre conventions that would be suitable for our final video. In the end, we decided to go for a mixture of action and comedy because this genre suits our actor and is probably doable within the timeframe of one year. It is also a unique type of genre as it can engages to the audience emotion which makes them interested into watching our film.

The teacher gave us an option to pick our own team so I picked a different group than my last tourism advertisement video. The reason is that we often engage in conflict too much and all of us decided to disband and go our own separate ways. I was luckily invited to this group where they are all talented filmmakers. So far this group has less conflict compared to my older group which I'm really grateful for. But if anything happens I will be sure to update this blog.

Week 1 This week, we learned about the media industry, including production, distribution, and exhibition. We also set up our blog and started creating a new group for our new media project. I am eager to see how this group will improve over my last term 1 group.
Week 2 Today I learned genre more details and researched more in-depth about how convention subverts and conforms our movie research. We also researched companies and industries that do action/thriller genres to see how they would convey that genre to the audience so we could use it in our final video.
Week 3 This week we did two big researches and 6 small researches on the genre that we are aiming for. This helps us to further understand the technical elements we are aiming for to finish our final project.
Week 4 On this week we did our statement of intent for our project before progressing to the next stage. We worked as a group and created the initial ideas where we finalised our genre and audience for our final project. That week we also assigned roles to each of our groups so we have an organized and easier project.
Week 5 This week we worked on the storyboard and learned how to properly work on our storyboard. It has become my task to draw the storyboard as my other group mates would work on the technical elements needed for the scenes. This week proved to be useful as it helped us to plan ahead before doing our final project filming on set.
Week 6 This week we worked fully on our project film and finished the storyboard along with the risk assessments, and statement of intent. We also did a screen test where everyone was given a line and tried to act them in front of the class. I am very confident of my teammate and I think we will finish this project on time.
Making weekly progress allows me to keep track of what I have learned so far and goals that I needed to achieve within that week for Semester 1 (Term 2).

Week 1 This week we recreated a scene from John Wick as our practice from a long holiday to refresh our filming skills. We learned a lot from this week as we now can decide who in our group has the capabilities to edit videos, film, etc.
Week 2 This week we learned about different skills in editing such as cuts, fade etc. The teacher gave us different clips that needed editing to make it into one film that made sense. We had an overall good experience as we now have a basic understanding of editing.
Week 3 This week we learned theorist and their theory such as Laura Mulvey where she states "Sex is biological, gender is behavioural." We learned about representation and gender theory. A new post has been added to our blog called "Behind the scenes", this is where tasks will be given to our members during shooting. We also made progress on our filming task where we started filming on the chosen location. However, we have not finished recording 100% and we would need to visit our location again to continue our filming. There might be a few changes on the storyboard due to the environmental issues of our location.
Week 4 During this week we only had one lesson because school has 3 days of holidays and we were supposed to have a media study lesson. During the lesson, we learn different typefaces and fonts that are suitable for our genre of film opening and how they can attract different types of audiences. We also had to reconsider and shoot our film opening scene because it wasn't according to the storyboard and it is not what we planned and wanted.
Week 5
On this week, we had a long national holiday so the school was shut down. The progress was minimal during this week as I couldn't meet my groupmates at school.
Week 6
This week we also gathered responses from our audience and their suggestion about our film. We also had online lessons during this week as the school was shut down again due to the harsh condition of weather. The progress was yet again minimal.
Week 7
On this week we went back to offline school and learned about CCR. The CCR helped us to create the reflection of our final film. This week we also gathered audience feedback about our film to find any flaws in our film from their suggestion. It appears like we had to re-shoot our film and fast as the deadline is coming close.
Week 8 This week we had a mock test of this week and in the next few meetings, we had to start early for our CCR 3 and 4. I did a little work with all the CCRs and hopefully, I finish all the CCRs before next week.
Week 9 This week we finished all the mock tests so now all we have to worry about is our final film opening result. This week I worked with the typeface and font that would be suitable for our film opening's credits and title. The film opening we had was not according to the storyboard so this week I had to rework the storyboard and hopefully finish it before next week. I did not finish my CCR and so I need to finish it A.S.A.P.
